SLCC Dance Company plans Spring concert
Salt Lake Community College Dance Company is presenting their annual Spring concert titled, "Visual Art of Dance," on April 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., in the Grand Theater, 1575 South State Street. The concert features dances that are based on works of visual art for inspiration.
This is a multi-media performance with visual art images and film coordinated with live performance. Community professionals, such as Stephen Brown of SBdance, flamenco dancer Solange Gomez, Natosha Washington, Roxanne Duennebeil and SLCC dance faculty members will present works, along with the best of SLCC student choreography.
Tickets are $8 or half price if two non-perishable food items are brought in for the Utah Food Bank. SLCC students and staff receive free admission with a current SLCC I.D. and two food items.
Brown has set his witty prop piece, "Dry Spell," on Dance Company dancers, utilizing umbrellas and inspired by film noir images. Washington uses a Jackson Pollack work as catalyst for a modern dance and a hip-hop piece that will be presented as moving graffiti art. Urban artist Romare Bearden is the inspiration for a jazzy pointe ballet, and Impressionist artists are the muses for a lyrical ballet, both choreographed by Roxanne Duennebeil. In addition to the community choreographers, the best of student choreography will be presented, inspired by such artists as Kadinsky, Picasso and Salvador Dali.
About this performance, Tess Boone, company director and Associate Professor of Dance said, "This concert has impressive variety and a wonderful visual sense that will appeal to our digitally sophisticated audience. It is a good example of our commitment to the convergence of technology and performing arts. Including community professionals in our performance is an exciting way to fulfill our mission as a community college."
