The names might be newer than in years past, but Kearns Highs swimming program has positioned itself well for the state meet just a few months into the season.

The Cougars boys team has swimmers ranked in the top 12 in the state in seven of eight individual events, while the relay squads are each within the top six. Meanwhile, the girls team has swimmers in all individual events ranked among the top 15 times in the state, and the relays are no worse than sixth.

Taylorsville has three boys individual times ranked within striking distance of the state championships, along with two others that could move up with better performances.

Bryce Pearson had four of the fastest individual event times for the Cougars through the meets of Dec. 9. Pearson led Kearns in the 50 freestyle (23.25 seconds), 100 free (50.11), 200 free (1:52.83) and 100 backstroke (57.28). Nathan Peercy led the 200 individual medley (2:07.15) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.44), Austin Snow was tops in the 100 butterfly (1:00.17) and Adam Parkinson led the 500 free (5:13.16).
