Grab a chair and get ready for a big show in the sky over Kearns on Aug. 11. The ‘fire’ part of the Fire, Water and Ice festival will be bigger, brighter and longer than ever before.

“Firestorm Pyrotechnics out of Springville will be shooting off 1,600 shells, all set to music,” said Steve Cook, festival director at the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center. “The fireworks will last between 18-20 minutes; longer than they ever have before.”

This is the 14th year for the festival, which originally started as a grand opening celebration for the KOPFC in July.

“After the first two years, we moved the celebration to August because there was so much going on in the community around the Fourth of July,” Cook said.

Cook expects between 10-12,000 people to attend the festival throughout the day. Tickets can be purchased at the KOPFC before Aug. 11 for a reduced price or at the door. Tickets are $5/adults, $4/teens and $3/children. Those under two are free.

“We’ve tried to spread the activities out so there will be plenty to do all over the park, not just the pools,” Cook said.

There will be video games and inflatables for the teen crowd in the Teens Only Zon,e and $2 unlimited wristbands for the inflatables and giant slides.

“Anyone who is brave enough can get their picture taken with zombies from the Fear Factory, and then watch them dance at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.,” Cook said.

The main stage will be jiving to the sound of the Salamanders from 7-9:30 p.m. and fire dancers will take the stage at 8:40 p.m.

Keeping with tradition, there will be a silent auction to raise funds to grant a terminally ill child a wish as part of the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

“Some years we raise enough money to grant two wishes,” Cook said.

Cook and his staff are also looking for volunteers, ages 14 and up, to help with a shift or stay the entire day. Volunteers get Fire, Water and Ice t-shirts, swimming passes to use another day and other free items. To volunteer, call Jennifer at the KOPFC office at 801-966-5555.
